Senegal has chosen Mati Diop’s “Atlantics” as their official entry for best international feature film category at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020. “Atlantics” was awarded the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Diop’s feature directorial debut marks the first time a film directed by a black woman competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Along the Atlantic coast, a soon-to-be-inaugurated futuristic tower looms over a suburb of Dakar. Ada, 17, is in love with Souleiman, a young construction worker.
